Harbor Shores, Community Partners Launch $114 Million Harbor Village Development, Announce Details
10/18/2013
BENTON HARBOR, Mich., Oct. 18, 2013 – Envisioned as a catalyst for the next phase of Benton Harbor’s economic development plan, Harbor Shores officially launched its mixed-used development, Harbor Village, today at a special event with community partners and Michigan Governor Rick Snyder. Serving as the project’s anchor is The Inn at Harbor Shores, a $26 million full-service luxury hotel, which will open in spring 2014 and serve as a host site for the 2014 Senior PGA Championship presented by KitchenAid.
“More than 10 years ago, discussions began with community leaders, elected officials and corporate leaders about building something that would make a difference in our community – something that would bring people together and provide opportunity, hope and make an economic impact,” said Jeff Noel, president of Harbor Shores. “As a community, we’ve come so far since those discussions and we’re proud that Harbor Shores and now Harbor Village are helping us bring that vision to life.”
Set inside the Harbor Shores development, the $114 million Harbor Village project is located on the north bank of the St. Joseph River, just east of the M-63 bridge in Benton Harbor. Featuring a luxury hotel, marina and four residential living options, the development will bring an estimated 230 direct jobs to the community and add additional tourism revenue to the local economy. Harbor Shores partnered with St. Joseph-based Edgewater Resources to make the concept for this mixed-use development a reality.
“Harbor Shores and Harbor Village is a great example of public and private partnerships working together to create hundreds of jobs, draw tourism and promote St. Joseph, Benton Harbor and Southwest Michigan,” Gov. Rick Snyder said. “Michigan is the comeback state. Our reinvention happens as people look for innovative solutions. This project, on the shores of beautiful Lake Michigan and featuring Michigan products, harnesses the very best our state has to offer, spurring other economic development and opportunities, and setting the table for long- term success in the region.”
The Inn at Harbor Shores, the cornerstone of the Harbor Village development, is the first high- rise hotel built on Lake Michigan’s southwest shores in more than 10 years. The hotel will feature a design that blends the modern with elegant touches that recall the great lakefront resorts of the 1900s and will spotlight local Michigan products in every aspect of the experience – from its art to its food and beverage options to even its linens.
The full-service, high-touch Inn at Harbor Shores will include 92 guestrooms, 14 suites and 10,000 square feet of event space. The property will feature Plank’s Tavern, a restaurant serving handcrafted food and beverages featuring local ingredients, set in a casual environment on the water.
The Inn’s guests will also enjoy such amenities as indoor and outdoor pools, a whirlpool, spa, salon, fitness center and rooftop deck with sweeping views of Lake Michigan, Harbor Shores’ Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, the St. Joseph and Paw Paw Rivers and the City of St. Joseph.
“With its focus on luxury and the guest experience, The Inn at Harbor Shores will set a new standard in southwest Michigan’s hotel market – and we think that will encourage vacationers who’ve never been to Benton Harbor to spend some time with us,” said Ron Shults, principal, Edgewater Resources. “We’re proud to be part of a project that has such potential to showcase our community from so many aspects while increasing tourism.”
In addition to The Inn at Harbor Shores, Harbor Village includes the recently opened Marina at Harbor Shores. The marina offers 54 floating dock slips for boats from 25 to 90 feet in length and 350 feet of broadside dockage for yachts to 150 feet and longer. The marina also offers broadside dockage for approximately 30 guest boaters. Annual dock space leases are available.
Harbor Village will also offer four new residential living options, complementing the range of cottages and homes already available at Harbor Shores:
- The Inn at Harbor Shores Residences – 14 two- and three-bedroom luxury suites on the Inn’s seventh and eighth floors, available for individual ownership with an optional rental program operated by the management of The Inn at Harbor Shores.
- Harbor House Condominiums — Three five-story buildings adjacent to The Inn at Harbor Shores, each comprised of 22 one and two-bedroom units. Units include a managed rental program option.
- ShipWatch Condominiums – 88 luxury residences overlooking the St. Joseph River, Harbor Shores Golf Course or both, planned for three six and seven-story buildings.
- Harbor Village Cottages – 60 single-family cottage sites in a maintenance-free community to sold as building sites for development of custom designs. Buyers may select from sites fronting a private park, views of the Harbor Shores Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course or the Paw Paw River.
