Harbor Village boutique hotel in St. Joseph receives $3 million in state grants
July 24th 2013 – ST. JOSEPH, MI – Plans to redevelop a vacant industrial site into a 100-room boutique/resort style hotel at Harbor Shores in St. Joseph are moving forward with help of $3 million from the state, announced on Wednesday.
The Harbor Village at Harbor Shores received a $2.1 million infrastructure improvement grant from the Michigan Strategic Fund and a $900,000 Michigan Community Revitalization Program performance-based grant.
The Harbor Village at Harbor Shores, LLC, received the Community Development Block Grant and will invest $17.6 million into the project, which is estimated to create 68 full-time equivalent jobs over the next two years. More than half of the jobs will be filled by low-and moderate-income individuals, according to a release from Gov. Rick Snyder’s office.
The City of St. Joseph will invest $266,120 toward the project.
Harbor Shores is a 530-acre, mixed use development that spans from Benton Harbor, St. Joseph, to Benton Charter Township. This development is a cooperative effort between the Consortium for Community Development, Cornerstone Alliance, Whirlpool Foundation, the cities of Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, Benton Charter Township, Berrien County, the state of Michigan and others.
The hotel will include a restaurant, bar, meeting rooms, fitness and spa areas, conference spaces and two floors of condominiums with indoor parking. The infrastructure improvements designated for the grant include the installation of public water, sewer, parking lot and walking trails.
The project was approved with two other projects that the Snyder administration estimates will generate $767 million and 5,000 jobs in Detroit, Lansing and St. Joseph.
The other projects include a new Detroit Red Wings arena in downtown Detroit and the expansion of Jackson National Life Insurance Company’s headquarters in Jackson.
