Home Construction Begins at Harbor Shores

Despite economy, real estate buyers flock to gem of Southwest Michigan

BENTON HARBOR, Mich., Dec. 14, 2009 – Construction has commenced on the first three residential units in the Hideaway and Fairways neighborhoods at Harbor Shores, Lake Michigan’s first beach and golf resort community just 90 minutes east of Chicago. The 500+ acre, master-planned resort community in the towns of Benton Harbor and St. Joseph, Mich., continues to move forward at a robust pace despite the current real estate market.

The ground breaking of the three residential properties is the first real estate installment at Harbor Shores, which will eventually feature nearly 800 residential units, commercial space, marinas, boutique hotel and spa as well as a wide array of resort and community amenities. Harbor Shores represents the last and largest stretch of developable land along the shores of Lake Michigan.

The community continues to reach important milestones at the close of 2009, including the opening of preview play at The Golf Club at Harbor Shores, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course. The 18-hole championship layout, which will serve as the centerpiece of the community, is set for its grand opening in summer 2010.

"The commencement of residential real estate construction marks an important milestone in the development of what will be a world-class destination in Southwest Michigan,” said Harbor Shores Director of Marketing Ron Eng. "Harbor Shores will serve as an enabler for systemic economic, environmental and social revitalization of the area.”

To commemorate the start of construction, Harbor Shores will host a ground breaking ceremony on Thursday, Dec. 17, at 10 a.m. (EST) at Lake Michigan College’s M-TEC facility. The ceremony will include remarks from Harbor Shores Managing Director Mark Hesemann and other community representatives as well as a ground breaking ceremony and tour of home sites.
